THE ASYLUM: A JACK NIGHTINGALE SHORT STORY is the latest in the series of 7 novels and a number of short stories about Jack Nightingale, an ex-London crisis mediator turned private eye after he fails to stop a young girl from diving off a building early in the first novel, NIGHTFALL. Jack has survived having his soul sold to a demon by his father before he was born, and a number of encounters with various demons and Satanic organizations, during which he has learned quite a bit about the practice of black magic. This time around, his current employer, billionaire occultist Joshua Wainwright has Jack intercede with Keith Harrington, a TV show host intending to film in the eponymous Wentworth Asylum, something that Wainwright knows could lead to disastrous results for the film crew and others. Wentworth has a long and nasty history of patient death, torture, human experimentation going back decades until it was finally shut down in the 1970s. But it is still haunted by something.
It was nice to see Jack again, but I wish Leather would write anther novel rather than these shorts. The novels tend to have a lot more magic in both literal and figurative meanings of the word. Still, the shorts are better than nothing. The writing is crisp as always and there is some grisly stuff and frights here, as well of lots of deaths, and Jack's knowledge of the occult turns out to be key in the end. Three and a half stars rounded up to 4 for old time's sake.

The Asylum A Jack Nightingale Short Story edition by Stephen Leather Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Very good book, like all the others the the series it's a thrill to read from start to finish.i definitely recommend it.
One of the creepiest stories I've read since Pet Sematary... I wish it had been a novel instead of a short story, because I didn't want it to end...
This is yet another example of Stephen Leather's amazing ability to write a rattling good story.Gripping from first to last. Well worth the read.
Even a short Nightingale story is better than most long stories from other authors
I look forward to more in this series
Love Stephen's style and reading this at 2am gave me chills. I wish it was a bit longer though, but overall an amazing entry in the series!
